Sinn Fein TD Eoin O Broin and his publisher Merrion Press have donated the royalties from his book on housing to leading homelessness charity Inner City Helping Homeless.
Published in 2019, Home: Why Public Housing is the Answer, comprises the Sinn Fein housing spokesperson’s analysis of the current housing crisis and outlines alternative policy measures to grapple with one of the predominant issues in Irish politics.
Before the most recent General Election on February 8, Mr O Broin’s book had sold 1,100 copies nationwide.
Following the well-documented Sinn Fein surge, in which Mary Lou McDonald’s party won 37 seats in the Dail and became the second-largest party in Irish politics, Mr O Broin’s book enjoyed a similar leap in sales, as another 1,100 copies walked off the shelves and a reprint of 500 copies was ordered.
On Thursday, Merrion Press and Mr O Broin presented Inner City Helping Homeless with a donation of €2,000, composed of €1,600 in royalties and an additional €400 from Merrion Press.
Posting on Facebook, Merrion Press said: ‘Merrion Press Publisher Conor Graham joined Eoin O Broin in Dublin today to hand over a donation to Inner City Helping Homeless.
‘Eoin had chosen to donate the royalties of his book, Home, to the ICHH and we were delighted to add our own contribution. They do amazing work, which has never been more important.’
Inner City Helping Homeless thanked Mr O Broin and Merrion Press for the ‘fantastic donation’.
The Dublin-based charity went on to praise Mr O Broin’s book, adding: ‘Eoin’s book provides viable solutions to the housing crisis and we really appreciate the kind donation of royalties to support our work in the fight against homelessness’.
